The use of good songs in television commercials gives us mixed emotions. We love the two car ads which feature classic rock songs.
A few years back, Cadillac introduced Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" in their car ads. This was the first Led Zeppelin song used in a commercial.
Today, Jaguar is using the great Deep Purple song "Hush" to advertise their cars.
Both commercials are for upscale vehicles. It's presumed older buyers are quite familiar with both songs. Whether or not the song itself induces one to go out and buy a car because of it, is highly doubtful. If anything, the song draws attention to the car.
The problem with using great songs in commercials is it cheapens the song. They originally weren't recorded with cars or whatever else they're being used for in mind. To extend this discussion, many great songs are misused in movies and television shows as well. We are afraid memory flashback will result when a favorite song is heard. Much like when MTV was in the business of playing music videos, a bad video would destroy the pleasure of hearing a great song.
